Three other surgeons I got to observe at University Hospitals Geauga were an orthopedic surgeon, an obstetric/gynecologist surgeon, and an oncologist. The orthopedic surgeon was addressing a prior break in the wrist of a patient that required additional surgery. The surgery was fascinating because through a small incision I could see many bones, ligaments, and tendons in the wrist. Observing an orthopedic surgeon allowed me to see many different instruments used in their surgeries. The surgeons used a drill and many different drill bits to successfully perform their procedure. I observed that orthopedic surgery can be a lot more invasive because it requires working with bones, ligaments, and tendons that take months to heal. The surgeons taught me that without proper lifestyle choices and practices, the surgery can be unsuccessful and take a lot longer to heal. After observing the orthopedic surgeon, I went to an operating room across the hall to see an obstetric/gynecologist and an oncologist operate. I found it interesting that two surgeons with different specialties overlapped to help one patient. Walking into the operating room, it was pretty dark because the surgeons were using screens to see imaging from scopes inside small incisions to see what was happening inside the patient. The surgeons were able to complete their surgery without leaving large lasting scars on the patients. On the screens that projected the imaging from the scopes, the surgeons showed me the important veins and body parts they were trying to repair. I found the instruments interesting again because most of them had many different functions built into one instrument. For example, a scissor also cauterized, so that surgeons did not keep having to switch what instrument went into the patient. Something I found funny when spending time in the operating room was that I got to hear every surgeon's taste in music. Many surgeons play music when operating, which is something that I did not know. Overall, I really enjoyed the variety of surgeries and specialties I got to see at University Hospitals Geauga.

(example of laparoscopic instruments because I could not take pictures in the operating room)
